The Substance (2024): review

The Substance (2024) is a striking contribution to body horror. Coralie Fargeat presents a disturbing vision of self-destruction in pursuit of youth and beauty, using a story that is both grotesque and substantial.

Demi Moore plays Elisabeth Sparkle, an ageing television star trying to hold onto her place in a merciless entertainment industry. On her 50th birthday, the industry's obsession with youth becomes a brutally personal threat. An illicit treatment promises access to a younger self, but its apparent solution comes at a terrible price. Sue, played by Margaret Qualley, emerges through a painful physical transformation, making the conflict between the two versions of Elisabeth impossible to ignore.

Moore and Qualley are both remarkable. Moore moves from vulnerability to raw, unvarnished anger, giving the grotesque events an emotional foundation. Qualley's unsettling vitality expresses the appeal of the younger body while also revealing the split at the heart of the character's existence.

The imagery fascinates and repels at the same time. The transformation effects are impressive precisely because they are so uncomfortable to watch. Physical spectacle is tied directly to the film's central idea: destroying oneself in the name of becoming more acceptable or desirable.

The Substance is also a satire of a society fixated on youth and beauty. Its outrageous horror images are inseparable from that criticism, which helps the film linger after its immediate shocks have passed.

This is a compelling, disturbing film that challenges the audience while remaining forcefully entertaining. Its inventive imagery and performances are reasons to see it, but so are the questions it raises about how we value bodies, beauty and age.
