The Old Guard 2: A Sequel That Stops Instead of Finishing

Charlize Theron and Uma Thurman cannot give enough weight to an action-fantasy sequel that feels like preparation for another film.

The Old Guard 2 feels like half a film. The first instalment's conflicts return with potentially interesting consequences: Quỳnh seeks revenge after her captivity, while Andy must deal with losing immortality. Those changes could provide emotional weight. Instead, the sequel too often leaves its characters and ideas close to the surface.

Charlize Theron has the presence to carry Andy's struggle, but the character is pushed away from the centre. Quỳnh's anger receives little complexity. Uma Thurman's Discord initially suggests a formidable opponent, only to become more a placeholder for a bigger conflict than a fully persuasive antagonist here.

The expanded mythology contains useful possibilities, including developments with genuine consequences. The problem is what the film does with them. Too much feels like setup, with insufficient dramatic return inside this particular story. An intended continuation does not remove the need for the film in front of us to function.

Visually, the sequel is inconsistent. Unsteady camerawork, dark lighting and action lacking impact weaken its force. A sustained movement through Andy's memories attempts to supply feeling but comes across as stylistically awkward. The clarity and confidence of the first film are noticeably reduced.

The team also suffers. Joe and Nicky's relationship receives little development, Nile remains less substantial than she should, and Booker's changes are not given enough dramatic space. Victoria Mahoney's direction does not bring these strands into a coherent rhythm. Scenes and characters can feel abruptly introduced or abandoned.

The ending is the central frustration. Rather than a satisfying cliffhanger, it feels like a manuscript interrupted just as it becomes interesting. I give the film 2.5 out of 5 stars, allowing some goodwill for its ambition. Fans may appreciate individual ideas and moments, but as a complete experience this is too unfinished and unfocused. It is preparation where a film ought to be.
