In the Lost Lands sends witch Gray Alys and hunter Boyce into a dangerous landscape on a queen's commission. Adapted from George R. R. Martin's short story by Paul W. S. Anderson, it has an appealing mixture of dark fantasy, ruined surroundings and Western elements.
Milla Jovovich gives Alys an intense presence, with hints of conflict beneath her power. Dave Bautista complements her through Boyce's rougher manner. The partnership contributes more to the film's momentum than many of its narrative developments.
The barren landscapes and destroyed spaces establish an effective atmosphere of menace and desolation. Anderson uses them to give the adventure a mystical quality, even when the effects are more competent than remarkable.
The writing is the major weakness. Familiar dialogue and underdeveloped events make parts of the story feel fragmented. Supporting characters have little room to acquire motivations, so dramatic moments cannot always create the feeling they need.
The action is fast and organised, but rarely introduces something beyond the director's familiar methods. Music supports the darkness without providing an especially memorable identity.
There is potential in the cast and images, yet the story remains too flat to fulfil it. For a brief fantasy diversion the film may be sufficient. I wanted stronger connections between its world, its people and the consequences of their journey.
