Familiar characters at a new stage
Davis, Ken, Yolei and their fellow former DigiDestined have grown older. The appearance of an unusual egg and their encounter with Lui Owada open another story about the bond between humans and Digimon.
Tomohisa Taguchi uses the familiar cast for a return that does not simply reset everything to its former state. Their changed stage of life gives the adventure a more mature perspective. For fans, seeing this community again while recognising its development is an important attraction.
A new emotional focus
Lui and Ukkomon introduce questions that go beyond an ordinary confrontation with an enemy. The new backstory brings serious and darker feelings into the film. Megumi Ogata and Rie Kugimiya give the two characters expression and weight in the Japanese version.
That expansion has potential. The complex plot, however, does not always establish its connections clearly. Some transitions and the uneven pace create distance precisely where the story needs direct emotional involvement.
Animation between action and quiet
Yumeta’s animation combines dynamic movement with calmer, emotionally focused passages. Its polished presentation keeps the familiar Digimon world recognisable. The action is effective too.
Akatsuki Yamatoya’s screenplay aims to do more than provide straightforward nostalgia. That ambition is welcome, but it does not automatically make the narrative more cohesive. The complicated construction remains the film’s clearest limitation.
Verdict
The Beginning is a welcome addition for Digimon fans, offering nostalgia, appealing animation and a more serious new conflict. A sometimes confusing story and fluctuating pace prevent its emotional ideas from consistently reaching their full potential.
