The Book of Wonders brings a mother's hope into a warm, emotionally direct drama. Lisa Azuelos adapts Julien Sandrel's story through Thelma, whose son Louis falls into a coma after an accident. His list of wishes becomes the starting point for a journey.

Alexandra Lamy gives Thelma authenticity and emotional depth. Her connection with Hugo Questel makes the mother-and-son relationship convincing, while Muriel Robin adds another valuable layer as Thelma's mother. The warmer treatment of that relationship enriches the adaptation.

The trip matters beyond the places Thelma visits. Trying to understand her son also leads her to reconsider her own life. The film connects that personal discovery with her desperate hope, keeping the relationship at the centre of its movement around the world.

The changing locations give the images variety, and the music strengthens the emotional atmosphere. Azuelos combines a warm approach with humour without losing the seriousness of the situation. The performances keep the feelings connected to recognisable people.

Some liberties in the hospital scenes and relationship dynamics remain noticeable. They belong to a story built around hope rather than a realistic account of medical treatment. The adaptation nevertheless retains the novel's emotional core.

This is a moving, thoughtful film supported by strong acting and sensitive direction. Its warmth gives the journey an engaging human connection. Both readers of the novel and newcomers can find something substantial in Thelma's effort to understand the person she loves.
