David Dietl’s Long Story Short, originally titled Feste & Freunde – Ein Hoch auf uns!, follows ten friends across seven celebrations over three years. The German film opened in cinemas on January 2, 2025. Its tragicomic approach explores friendship through both life’s pleasures and its disappointments.

Seven celebrations and a secret

The story begins on New Year’s Eve in 2019. Ellen, played by Laura Tonke, is concealing an affair with Sebastian, played by Ronald Zehrfeld, who is married to Eva. That relationship creates tension throughout the group. Weddings, birthdays and successive New Year celebrations provide an episodic framework in which the friendships gradually change.

Strong performances, different relationships

The performances are impressive. Tonke combines strength and vulnerability, making Ellen’s conflicts believable. Zehrfeld gives weight to Sebastian’s divided loyalties. Their relationship has emotional intensity, while Nicholas Ofczarek and Pegah Ferydoni bring welcome lightness through another developing romance. Annette Frier and Trystan Pütter portray the strains of a marriage in crisis.

Humour and seriousness in balance

Dietl makes the friendships and disagreements feel lively and authentic. The balance between humour and serious material is finely judged. Events such as the Covid pandemic affect the characters, placing their private lives within a recognisable recent history.

Images and music

Holly Fink’s cinematography captures intimate moments at the celebrations as well as wider landscapes. Enis Rotthoff’s music supports the emotional effect of individual scenes and contributes to the overall atmosphere.

Not every storyline receives enough depth

Some plotlines could have received more attention, and certain developments are predictable. Those weaknesses do not undo the film’s ability to convey the complexity of relationships in a convincing, touching way.

Verdict

Long Story Short brings humour and seriousness together successfully. Strong acting and an emotional narrative make it a worthwhile German film, one that encourages reflection while remaining entertaining.
