Our Times (2025): review

A pleasantly unhurried time-travel romance about changing roles and a relationship under strain, although its final act resolves some issues too quickly.

Netflix hat einen Zeitreisefilm, den kaum jemand kennt

Time travel changes a relationship

Nora and Héctor are scientists who travel from 1966 to 2025. For both, the leap means more than new technology. Social possibilities and expectations have changed. Nora meets them with curiosity, while Héctor’s familiar position becomes uncertain. Chava Cartas primarily uses the science-fiction idea for a romantic comedy that asks about roles within a relationship.

Lucero gives Nora warmth and dignity

I particularly enjoy Lucero. Nora discovers the new environment with wonder without becoming a naive comic figure. Her curiosity and dignity make me like the character. Benny Ibarra gives Héctor’s uncertainty and jealousy understandable form. Towards the end, however, his development loses depth. The couple remains interesting without always receiving equally careful treatment.

The quiet approach is a strength

The film takes its time rather than presenting the journey as a frantic collection of technological surprises. Its camera and restrained music support a pleasantly unhurried rhythm. Encounters with smartphones, a café and a sex shop provide humour without humiliating the characters. Changing social roles remain visible beneath the comic situations.

The conclusion resolves too much at once

I wanted more space for the final act’s decisions. Héctor’s crisis is addressed quickly, and Nora’s development does not lead consistently convincingly to her choice. The consequences of time travel could also have been developed more carefully. Without revealing the resolution itself, this is where the film simplifies conflicts that were initially more interesting.

Verdict

Our Times is a warm, pleasantly told romance with a strong Lucero. Time travel creates an interesting perspective on equality and the couple’s relationship. The accelerated resolution weakens the impression without erasing what worked beforehand. My rating is 6 out of 10.
