When 8-year-old Anna disappears, her family and stepsister Ellie search desperately for her. Another strand follows Paris, who is troubled by the circumstances of his mother's death and is looking for answers. The two stories gradually connect, changing our understanding of the people involved.
The performances are consistently strong. Eliza Scanlen gives Ellie depth and credibility, while Dylan O'Brien makes Paris's relationship with the past convincingly troubled. Lauren Ambrose and Eric Lange add emotional weight to the family drama.
Held and George use the setting exceptionally well. Lowell A. Meyer's photography captures both the beauty and the unsettling quality of the lake. The atmosphere draws us into the mystery before the larger construction becomes clear. Its twists and emotional connections also make the involvement of producer M. Night Shyamalan feel fitting.
