A Brief Affair (2025): review

Strong actresses and interesting power games, but less emotional heat than this affair promises.

Four people and a secret relationship

Lea is a mother and journalist dissatisfied with her life. Married seismologist Rocco offers a secret connection whose agreed boundaries soon prove inadequate. When Lea enters his wife Cecilia’s practice, an apparently manageable affair becomes a complicated web of needs and control.

Ludovica Rampoldi does not reduce Lea to a dangerous intruder. She is wounded, contradictory and searching for meaning. Rocco is likewise more vain and weak than an unambiguous villain. This adult perspective is among the film’s more interesting qualities.

Careful construction, limited heat

Pilar Fogliati gives Lea a nervous combination of charm and vulnerability. Valeria Golino’s Cecilia observes with quiet intelligence. Adriano Giannini’s restraint suits Rocco, but less palpable passion develops between him and Lea than the story needs.

Rampoldi’s debut is carefully constructed. Motifs of strategy, physical impulse and controlled spaces connect the relationships. At times, however, the cleverness of that writing becomes too visible. Turns and explanations feel arranged rather than lived. The characters are interesting, but their emotional turmoil does not consistently reach the audience.

Verdict

A Brief Affair has good ideas and a convincing ensemble. Fogliati and Golino especially give the women more independence than a simple romantic triangle would offer. An overly polished script and limited chemistry prevent greater intensity. A solid, somewhat disappointing relationship drama rated 6 out of 10.
