John Crowley’s We Live in Time follows the relationship between ambitious London chef Almut and IT specialist Tobias. Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield lead a romantic drama about love, loss and the passing of time. Its German theatrical release was on January 9, 2025.

A love outside chronology

Instead of following a linear chronology, the film moves between different moments in the relationship. That structure offers an intimate view of its emotional highs and lows, but also requires attention. The decision distinguishes the story from more conventional romances without making it effortless to follow.

Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield

Pugh is excellent as Almut, whose experience of cancer involves strength, vulnerability and hope. Her nuanced performance makes it easy to care about her. Garfield is convincing as a partner facing the emotional and practical demands of life alongside someone seriously ill. Their chemistry gives the relationship tangible depth.

Intimate direction and visual time motifs

Crowley directs with a subtle elegance that emphasises intimacy. Visual references to clocks and time reinforce the film’s concern with impermanence. Stuart Bentley’s gentle, atmospheric images support the emotions rather than overwhelming them.

Restrained, effective music

Bryce Dessner’s music deserves particular recognition. It accompanies the emotional moments without becoming intrusive, adding dramatic weight and drawing the audience further into the story.

Limits of the non-linear approach

There are weaknesses as well. The non-linear approach may alienate some viewers, and the character development does not always reach its potential. The emotional force nevertheless outweighs those limitations.

Verdict

We Live in Time is a moving, intense drama with excellent actors, sensitive direction and a carefully considered structure. For viewers drawn to emotional love stories, it is a strong recommendation. Its encouragement to value time with the people we love leaves a lasting impression.
