After the romantic promise
Lin I-ling has lived with her husband Zeng Xue-you and his parents for three years and regularly considers separation. His charm is still there, but his dependence on his mother puts pressure on their relationship. The series begins where many romantic stories stop: the less glamorous reality of sharing everyday life.
That produces a mixture of comedy and relationship drama. Frustration is not treated merely as a punchline. Behind the misunderstandings lie a need for attention, personal fulfilment and a partner who makes his own decisions.
Humour with emotional weight
Alice Ko and Jasper Liu have the chemistry this story needs. Their characters can irritate each other while remaining understandable. The dialogue combines humour with more serious conversations instead of ignoring the difficult parts of a marriage.
Li Nien-hsiu finds an empathetic balance. The extended family adds conflicts without displacing the central relationship. Locations, camerawork and music support the changing moods; what matters more is how the two leads negotiate their needs and the expectations of the people around them.
Verdict
I Am Married...But! works for me as an honest, entertaining look at the ups and downs of married life. Its combination of emotional closeness and humour holds together because the performers do not reduce their characters to their most irritating qualities. Anyone seeking a romantic dramedy that takes life after initial infatuation seriously should give it a chance.
