Liz Garbus's documentary gains its force from families, persistent questions and institutional criticism.

Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer hits hard without depending on gruesome detail. Liz Garbus places the victims and the people who fought for them at the center of this three-part documentary.

The Gilgo Beach investigation begins here with Shannan Gilbert's disappearance and distressed emergency call. The discovery of women's bodies is disturbing, but the years of neglect surrounding the case are equally painful. The documentary follows the investigation through the arrest of Rex Heuermann, reflecting the case as presented in the series.

Its strongest element is the attention given to families. Mothers, sisters and friends keep asking questions when institutions fail them. Mari Gilbert's determination is particularly moving. These voices make the series human rather than voyeuristic.

Garbus does not separate that personal experience from criticism of the system. Investigative failures, institutional obstruction and the treatment of sex workers become part of the story. The documentary's closeness to those affected gives the structural analysis its weight.

The visual approach is calm and sober. Frantic editing and dramatic tricks are unnecessary when the testimony itself is this strong.

This is not casual true-crime entertainment. For me, it is an affecting reminder that every victim's life and every family's voice deserve attention. Its impact comes from listening, rather than from turning suffering into spectacle.
