The Many Deaths of Nora Dalmasso (2025): review

This crime documentary looks beyond the murder investigation to the treatment of Nora Dalmasso in public. Its measured approach makes the person behind the headlines more important than sensational revelations.

A person behind the headlines

Nora Dalmasso’s murder became a public event in which claims about her life repeatedly attracted attention. The documentary asks a different question: how much of the actual person remains when the media and the public mainly want an exciting story?

That adds another dimension to the case. Prejudice, social status and the treatment of a woman in public become as important as the investigation. The series attempts to make Nora visible behind other people’s descriptions of her.

The quiet approach is a strength

Interviews and archive material matter more than heavily dramatised reconstructions. Relatives, friends and other speakers add to the picture without turning it into one seamless explanation. The contradictions deserve space of their own.

The measured rhythm requires attention. This is not a documentary constantly announcing another spectacular revelation. Its emotional effect comes from showing how public curiosity and institutional interests transform a personal tragedy.

Verdict

Jamie Crawford’s documentary convinces me above all through its interest in the person behind the case. It does not pretend that a sensational insight could neatly dispose of every question.

Viewers seeking only a breathless crime story may find this approach too quiet. For me, its examination of publicity, dignity and premature judgements is the real strength. My rating: 8/10.
