Titan: The OceanGate Disaster – A Vision Without Enough Accountability

The documentary builds a disturbing portrait of OceanGate's culture, while leaving too little room for the wider failures around it.

Titan: The OceanGate Disaster is a disturbing investigative documentary rather than conventional catastrophe entertainment. Archive images, reconstructions and audio make the submarine's interior feel uncomfortably close, even though the fatal incident itself is not shown.

The film centres on Stockton Rush and the culture he built at OceanGate. It portrays a man whose ambition and belief in innovation left too little room for criticism. The gap between the vision and the warnings becomes increasingly difficult to watch.

Former employees' accounts are particularly powerful. Their recollections and the documentary's internal material suggest that concern was not simply invented after the disaster. Those voices make the failure personal: it becomes a story about decisions, responsibility and the treatment of people who challenged the company's direction.

That focus is also a limitation. I wanted the documentary to look further beyond Rush, examining oversight and the wider political and regulatory context. It touches those questions without giving them the space its character portrait receives.

The filmmaking is effective. Interviews, archive footage, original audio and animation sustain tension without needing sensational music or a lurid tone. The sober presentation makes the material more intense, not less.

I give it 7 out of 10 points. It is strong on a man and a company's mindset, weaker on the surrounding system. What stays with me is the sense that catastrophe did not arrive out of nowhere. The film makes the earlier choices and warnings hard to forget.
