Saw X offers a gripping exploration of John Kramer, known as Jigsaw, directed by Kevin Greutert and written by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg. This chapter brings the series’ familiar tension into closer contact with its central character’s dark and complicated world.
Kramer in Mexico
Set between Saw and Saw II, the story takes Kramer, played by Tobin Bell, to Mexico for an experimental cancer treatment. When he discovers that it is a scam, he turns the perpetrators into the subjects of his elaborate traps. The premise gives the film an opportunity to focus on Kramer in ways earlier instalments did not.
Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith
The performances are outstanding, particularly Bell’s continuing ability to fascinate and unsettle as Kramer. He brings humanity to the role and allows us to feel its contradictions. Shawnee Smith’s return as Amanda Young adds another layer through her complicated, sometimes ambiguous relationship with Jigsaw.
Nick Matthews’ images
Visually, Saw X is a masterpiece. Nick Matthews’ cinematography pays tribute to earlier films while establishing an atmosphere of its own. The Mexican setting provides a distinctive palette. The traps are cruel and inventive, but their design also contributes to the film’s meaning, making the experience both oppressive and compelling.
New depth for the series
The story and Bell’s performance bring the series new depth through their combination of emotional intensity and disturbing tension. That attention to its central figure gives this instalment force beyond the immediate spectacle of the traps.
Verdict
Saw X is more than another entry in the franchise. It explores Jigsaw’s dark world with confident direction, gripping writing, strong performances and visual precision. A clear recommendation for series fans and viewers who appreciate intense horror.
