Revelations: Strong Performances, Fragmented Tension

Yeon Sang-ho explores faith and trauma with ambition. Abrupt shifts keep the film from fully realizing its potential.

Revelations turns faith, guilt and uncertain reality into a dark psychological mystery. Yeon Sang-ho adapts his and Choi Gyu-seok's webtoon with ambition, but the film's uneven storytelling limits its impact.

Ryu Jun-yeol plays Pastor Min-chan, who interprets visions as divine revelations. Shin Hyun-been's Detective Yeon-hee carries the trauma of her sister's death. Their paths intersect around a disturbing case, with religious certainty and psychological instability complicating the investigation.

Ryu makes the pastor's spiritual crisis moving without overstating it. Shin is equally strong, conveying how deeply trauma can shape a person's perceptions. The visions involving her sister create a ghostly atmosphere, though some feel too constructed.

The repeated switching between the pastor's experiences and the detective's search interrupts the flow. Just as I became emotionally involved in one strand, the film moved away. Instead of strengthening suspense, the alternation sometimes fragments it.

The style is similarly inconsistent. Some scenes are dense and oppressive. Others, especially elaborate floating camerawork during visions, feel too experimental and pull attention away from the drama.

The themes remain interesting, yet the film does not always follow them through with enough clarity or conviction.

Strong actors and challenging ideas make Revelations worth considering for psychological-thriller fans. For me, they are also reminders of the more coherent film that might have emerged from these ingredients.
