Rodrigo Prieto makes his feature directing debut with Pedro Páramo, an adaptation of Juan Rulfo's literary classic. After his mother's death, Juan Preciado travels to the abandoned village of Comala in search of his father, the title character.

The story unfolds in a surreal world where the boundary between life and death dissolves. Juan encounters ghosts and learns about the tyrannical acts of his father, a powerful landowner who oppressed the village and its inhabitants. The narrative captures the magical realism associated with Rulfo's novel.

Manuel García-Rulfo gives Pedro a mixture of charisma and menace that conveys the character's ambiguity. Tenoch Huerta leads the audience through Comala as Juan, expressing curiosity and despair convincingly. Ilse Salas and Mayra Batalla contribute to the depth of the supporting relationships.

Prieto's experience as a cinematographer is evident in the powerful images. Light and shadow strengthen the ghostly atmosphere. The surreal sequences are particularly effective, dissolving the distinction between reality and the supernatural and drawing the viewer into Comala's mysterious world.

The music complements the visual richness and reinforces the emotional dimension of the story. The result is not only a tribute to a literary work, but also a reflection on power, guilt and the search for identity.

The complex structure and substantial characters ask something of the audience. In return, Pedro Páramo offers a rich cinematic experience. Admirers of magical realism and challenging filmmaking will find an accomplished adaptation whose themes retain their force.
