Nosferatu (2024): review

Robert Eggers reinterprets F. W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic without merely copying it. His Nosferatu pays tribute to the original while establishing an artistic identity of its own.

The story follows young property agent Thomas Hutter, played by Nicholas Hoult, as he travels to the Carpathians to conclude an agreement with Count Orlok. Bill Skarsgård’s performance honors Max Schreck’s unforgettable vampire without imitating him. Beneath extensive makeup, Skarsgård creates an unsettling, animalistic, yet tragic figure with a deep, almost hypnotic presence. The tension between his monstrosity and a subtle melancholy is remarkable.

Lily-Rose Depp adds depth and emotion as Hutter’s wife Ellen. She is more than an object of Orlok’s desire, struggling with inner conflicts and a dark past that leave her both vulnerable and strong. Hoult, meanwhile, combines innocence, a sense of duty, and desperate love for his wife.

Visually, Nosferatu is a masterpiece. Jarin Blaschke’s cinematography captures the ominous landscapes and the claustrophobic interiors of Orlok’s castle. The muted palette recalls German Expressionism while benefiting from contemporary techniques. Shadows and contrasts between darkness and light give the film a timeless quality that fits Eggers’s direction perfectly.

The staging is another strength. The tactile design and physical presence of the effects give the images an almost tangible intensity. Every moment feels considered, and the iconic encounters between Hutter and Orlok have an almost operatic quality. Such details distinguish the film from other contemporary horror productions.

There are weaknesses. The expanded story, especially Ellen’s background, adds depth but sometimes slows the pace. Eggers occasionally seems to be telling too much at once, diluting the focus. Some of the added scenes make the film feel longer than necessary.

Its strengths nevertheless outweigh those problems. The performances, visual brilliance, and dense atmosphere make this an exceptional cinematic experience that can speak both to admirers of the original and to a new audience.

This is an immersive, emotional journey combining horror with tragic beauty. Eggers again shows a gift for retelling old stories without losing their essence. Nosferatu brings tradition and innovation into an impressive balance.

The result is a fascinating reinterpretation that finds new facets in familiar material. Its performances, distinctive imagery, and respectful but bold approach reinforce Eggers’s position as one of his generation’s most interesting filmmakers.
