Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado offers more than a simple extension of the cartoon. It is a family adventure with humour, warmth and a surprisingly engaging sense of growing up. Younger viewers are clearly the main audience, but its treasure hunt and jungle puzzles have enough spirit to appeal beyond them.
Dora losing her map is both a practical problem and a useful image for this stage of her life. She doubts herself, asks questions and makes decisions that are not always right. That uncertainty gives the character more depth without removing the optimism that makes her appealing.
Samantha Lorraine handles that combination convincingly. She brings drive and enthusiasm, while allowing us to see the insecurity beneath them. Jacob Rodriguez's more considered Diego complements her well. The pair carry the adventure without their relationship feeling forced. Boots is used with welcome restraint, and most of his jokes land.
Alberto Belli keeps things moving through changing locations, traps, tunnels, riddles and mysterious objects. The attraction is closer to The Goonies' spirit of friendship and managed chaos than a darker adventure film. The jungle imagery is colourful without becoming exhausting, and the production design supplies useful variety. Some computer effects are conspicuous, but they do not dominate the experience.
The supporting roles are less developed. Camila's conflict with Dora could have more substance, and cultural identity and environmental concerns are touched on rather than meaningfully explored. Given the setting, those omissions feel like opportunities left unused.
Still, the film gets a great deal right as family entertainment. It is funny, occasionally touching and consistently warm. I give it 3.5 out of 5 points. Dora grows older without becoming joyless, and the adventure preserves enough lightness and enthusiasm to make its imperfections relatively easy to forgive.
