A Girl Named Willow (2025): review

A charming family fantasy combines nature and friendship with appealing young performers and handmade magic.

A forest full of possibilities

Willow inherits a forest, a small house and a mysterious book. They open up a world she must learn to understand. Mike Marzuk connects this fantasy premise with friendship and the value of nature. The forest becomes more than a backdrop for magical events.

Beautiful woodland images and an appealing handmade quality sustain the atmosphere. Digital effects do not constantly demand attention. Curiosity and exploration remain as important as the supernatural possibilities, allowing the surroundings to feel worth caring about.

Friends who carry the story

Ava Petsch makes Willow’s uncertainty and growing courage believable. Together with Cora Trube, Anna von Seld and Mary Tolle, she carries the central relationship between the girls. Their different personalities give the group life, although their friendship occasionally develops a little too quickly.

Golo Euler as Willow’s father and Diana Amft as Gundula add warmth and humour. The film communicates its themes through experiences and relationships rather than constantly turning them into lessons. That makes it enjoyable for adults watching alongside a younger audience as well.

Verdict

A Girl Named Willow is an endearing family fantasy. Nature, friendship and carefully restrained magic work well together. More time to develop the bond between the girls would have helped, but the film’s charm remains intact.
