This Is Gonna Be Great turns a failed romantic plan into an opportunity for a different beginning. The Berlin dramedy combines humor with an involving interest in friendship, uncertainty and self-discovery.
David follows his girlfriend to Berlin, hoping to build a life as an actor. She ends the relationship almost immediately. He stays, facing the practical difficulty of finding a place in the city without the future he expected.
Rein Mulder gives David charming naivety and a real desire to prove himself. Abigail Abraham's Aisha adds emotional authenticity, while Jonas Strand Gravli's Rob contributes an appealingly awkward humor. Their chemistry is the series' center.
The encounters and setbacks are light in tone without losing the anxieties beneath them. Competition, the fear of failure and the search for a direction remain meaningful parts of David's experience. Beer ten Kate and Valerie Bisscheroux make Berlin lively, supported by Ton Peters's images.
For me, the series works because its humor does not treat uncertainty as something to dismiss. The characters' difficulties are recognizable, and their companionship makes the journey engaging. It is a refreshing dramedy about the attempt to create a life after an original plan has already fallen apart.
