The Leopard: Sicilian Splendour, Uneven Feeling

A strong cast and opulent production bring the family saga to life, though slow stretches and thin motivations reduce its intensity.

The Leopard returns to Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's story of an aristocratic Sicilian family confronting political and social change. Across six episodes, Don Fabrizio tries to understand what the emerging order means for the world he represents.

Kim Rossi Stuart gives the prince authority and melancholy, making his internal conflict persuasive. Saul Nanni supplies Tancredi's charm and ambiguity. Deva Cassel has presence as Angelica, while Benedetta Porcaroli makes Concetta's frustrated feelings particularly affecting.

The production brings its nineteenth-century world to life through costumes, locations and carefully composed images. Sicily's beauty and the family's splendour sharpen the contrast with the changes pressing in around them.

The storytelling is less consistent. Some episodes take too long without meaningfully advancing the drama, and underdeveloped characters make certain choices harder to understand. The visual richness is not always matched by emotional depth.

Comparison with Luchino Visconti's adaptation is difficult to avoid. This version offers worthwhile performances and a broader television canvas, but I miss some of the earlier film's intensity and richness. Modernising the approach does not automatically deepen it.

There is still an interesting historical and personal conflict here: tradition, progress and the sacrifices demanded by change. Viewers willing to accept a measured pace may find the family and setting rewarding. It is impressive to look at and often well acted, even when its dramatic force falls short.
