Pumpen is a ZDFneo comedy-drama about the mismatched siblings Mia, played by Lotte Becker, and Tom, played by Timur Bartels, who unexpectedly have to take over their parents’ gym in Magdeburg. Despite a serious starting point, the sudden death of their mother and the gym’s looming failure, the series balances humour with emotional moments.

An unwanted inheritance

Mia and Tom have to work together despite their differences if they want to preserve their mother’s legacy and avert financial ruin. Their conflicts allow for both comedy and personal development. The gym becomes a place where the siblings must face responsibilities they never expected to share.

Dynamic direction and camerawork

Directors including Daniel Vogelmann, Lynn Oona Baur, Anna-Lena Schwing and Maximilian Mundt bring the stories to life with energy and a sense of timing. The cinematography, by Adrian Cranage, Johannes Treß and Daniel Leibold among others, supports that approach with lively images that draw viewers into the action.

Mia and Tom at the centre

Mia and Tom make an effective contrast, reflecting the series’ concerns with family ties, self-discovery and loss. Lotte Becker and Timur Bartels give committed, natural performances. They lend the characters depth and make their struggles and development understandable.

A chaotic gym family

Supporting characters such as personal trainer Flora, fitness influencer Justin and yoga teacher Shae add variety and contribute to the humorous, sometimes chaotic atmosphere. The dialogue flows well and is witty, which should particularly appeal to younger viewers.

Body image and self-improvement

A gym is a useful setting for exploring fitness culture, body positivity and self-improvement. The same environment can feel intimidating and unfamiliar to one person while being ordinary and meaningful to another. That contrast provides a basis for an entertaining story with several perspectives.

Family and acceptance

Family, acceptance and the handling of difficult situations give the series broadly relatable themes. These concerns also make the characters’ personal conflicts matter beyond the immediate problems of running the gym.

Verdict

Pumpen begins with a somewhat clichéd premise but offers more than expected. Its mixture of humour, seriousness and character depth works well, making it pleasant viewing. There is room to develop some character arcs and storylines further, yet this is a solid German series that entertains and prompts reflection. Its distinctive setting and charming ensemble give it the potential to build a loyal audience.
