A long film that holds my attention
I watched The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in its extended Blu-ray version. Despite its length, I became so absorbed in the search for missing pieces that I barely noticed the time passing. Niels Arden Oplev does not tell this crime story dryly. It draws me in early and keeps giving me new reasons to question the people on screen.
Two compelling figures within the investigation
Henrik Vanger hires journalist Mikael Blomkvist to investigate the disappearance of his niece Harriet decades earlier. Alongside this case, we meet hacker Lisbeth Salander, whose own life is marked by serious conflict. When their paths meet, the investigation gains a further personal dimension. I would rather leave their discoveries for viewers to experience themselves.
Noomi Rapace becomes Lisbeth
Noomi Rapace is so convincing that I see Lisbeth rather than an actor performing a role. Vulnerability and resistance exist together in her portrayal. Some situations are deeply disturbing and left me angry or moved. Michael Nyqvist provides an equally convincing counterpart as Blomkvist. They sustain the film without requiring its tension to depend entirely on spectacular revelations.
An oppressive setting
The isolated world of the Vanger family strengthens the sense that much is concealed beneath the surface. Precise dialogue, music and carefully placed silences build the tension. Occasional lighter or funny moments relieve it at the right time. The action passages also fit the story rather than pushing the investigation aside.
Verdict
I can also recommend the American adaptation from 2011. This Swedish version convinces me through its performances, sharply written screenplay and believable suspense. Its dramatic moments make the investigation emotionally affecting as well as intriguing. It is an exceptionally successful crime thriller, and its long version thoroughly earns its time.
