The Apprentice: Learning the Rules of Power

Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong make Ali Abbasi's study of Donald Trump and Roy Cohn compelling, even when its later insights narrow.

Ali Abbasi's The Apprentice is a dark, fascinating character study of Donald Trump's rise through his relationship with the ruthless lawyer Roy Cohn. Instead of a conventional biopic, Abbasi focuses on the mentor-student dynamic. Sebastian Stan plays Trump, developing early insecurity into a hunger for power with remarkable subtlety; Jeremy Strong plays Cohn.

The story begins in the 1970s, when Trump wants to escape his father's expectations and establish himself in New York property. Cohn teaches him how to bend the rules of capitalism. Abbasi shows the relationship shaping Trump's personality without turning every scene into an explicit moral verdict. Strong makes Cohn disturbingly tangible, finding a human dimension without excusing his conduct. Those details give the film emotional credibility despite its harsh material.

Handheld camerawork reinforces the rawness of the story. Production design and costumes capture Trump's increasingly ostentatious world. The darker visual approach exposes the dirty workings of power and presents the American Dream as a struggle for domination.

The relationship is explored effectively, but the second half does not always find deeper insights into Trump's transformation. At times, it becomes caught in repeated displays of arrogance. The period atmosphere and the interplay between the actors remain compelling even when the analysis becomes less revealing.

The Apprentice shows a corrupt system helping its central figures become emblems of greed and power. It is worth watching for anyone interested in the relationship between politics, influence and human weakness. Its performances provide the strongest argument for that recommendation.
