Rich Flu: When Wealth Becomes a Threat

A striking dystopian premise and convincing performances survive a middle section that loses focus.

Rich Flu turns wealth into a direct threat. A mysterious virus begins with the richest people and works its way down, turning the established social order into something frighteningly unstable. Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia uses that premise to examine greed, inequality and the fragility of seemingly secure structures.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays Laura, whose professional advancement arrives just as the rules change. Her ambition and vulnerability are convincing. Rafe Spall gives the troubled marriage a credible emotional foundation, while Lorraine Bracco adds weight to the family relationships.

The contrast between luxury and destruction is particularly effective. Images of panic among the wealthy give the satire a surreal edge. The visual approach makes the disappearance of material security tangible instead of leaving the central idea as an abstract argument.

The score supports the tension and emotional intensity without becoming the main attraction. Personal crises remain understandable within the wider collapse, helped by the chemistry between the performers.

The film loses focus in the middle, however. Some strands feel insufficiently developed, and the exaggerated treatment of the upper classes occasionally weakens the seriousness of the subject. The strong concept does not always produce equally strong storytelling.

Even with those limitations, Rich Flu offers a provocative exploration of the pursuit of wealth. Its performances and images make it worth considering for viewers interested in socially critical, dystopian thrillers, although the result is less completely convincing than its premise.
