Never Let Go: Protection at the End of a Rope

Halle Berry and a dense woodland atmosphere sustain Alexandre Aja's thriller more effectively than its predictable dramatic structure.

Alexandre Aja's Never Let Go places Halle Berry and two young sons in an isolated forest cabin. Long ropes connect them to their home whenever they venture outside. The ropes serve as striking visual and thematic expressions of the threat posed by the unknown.

Berry is strong as Momma, a woman determined to protect her children. When one son begins questioning whether the evil she describes is real, the situation develops into an involving struggle for survival. Aja creates a claustrophobic atmosphere, reinforced by Maxime Alexandre's oppressive woodland imagery and the threatening soundscape.

The atmosphere and Berry's performance are stronger than the dramatic construction. The plot is predictable in places, and some developments are difficult to believe. The children would benefit from deeper characterization, while the conflicts and changing relationships need more development to achieve their full emotional impact.

Never Let Go considers the boundaries between protection and freedom. Its premise raises questions about social fears and the instinct to survive, even when the storytelling does not fully realize them.

The concept remains involving despite those weaknesses. Aja offers a challenging perspective on what it means to remain human under extreme pressure, but the film's dramatic shortcomings prevent its strong atmosphere from becoming an equally strong whole.
