French Lover has a familiar romantic-comedy arrangement: a charismatic film star, a woman outside his glamorous world, Paris and a relationship tested by differences and public attention. The ingredients promise easy enjoyment. They do not guarantee that the feelings will land.
Omar Sy plays Abel Camara with warmth, self-irony and enough uncertainty to make him more than an arrogant celebrity. Sara Giraudeau's Marion has a grounded presence and backbone of her own. The performances give the film a considerable advantage: these are people I am happy to watch spend time together.
Their chemistry works particularly well in playful moments. Teasing, messing around in the kitchen and sitting together are more convincing than the scenes that announce their emotional significance. Once dialogue starts explaining what the couple feels, some of that natural energy drains away. The space between the words is more romantic than the explanations.
The second half settles into a carefully arranged pattern of misunderstandings and conflicts between career and private life. It is not hard to anticipate the direction. Early hints that the film might do something different give way to safer, more familiar choices.
The setting is attractive, the direction competent and the supporting figures pleasant enough. Yet pleasant is often the limit. There is glamour, a little drama and a clear emotional shape, without much friction or a new perspective on relationships.
I give French Lover 2.5 out of 5 stars. It is an easy watch that produces more smiles than sighs, helped substantially by its leads. What is missing is the spark that would turn agreeable romantic entertainment into something with genuine emotional depth.
