Gerard Butler returns

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera (2025) continues the story of the 2018 crime thriller, with Christian Gudegast returning as director and Gerard Butler back as the uncompromising Big Nick O'Brien. The sequel offers hard action, tense pursuits and another opportunity for its leads to play off each other.

A heist in Europe

Donnie Wilson, played by O'Shea Jackson Jr., is in Europe preparing a major diamond robbery with the Panther crew. Nick follows him, but their relationship becomes more complicated than a straightforward chase: the detective moves into the thieves' world and becomes involved in their operation. The distinction between the man pursuing criminals and the criminals themselves grows increasingly unstable.

The film remains firmly within the heist genre. Planning, shifting loyalties and the danger of the job supply its suspense. The European setting gives the series a different visual environment without changing its essential interest in tough men testing one another.

The leads carry it

Butler is again the film's central presence. His Nick is forceful, morally questionable and convincing in his rough physicality. He plays someone whose conflict is not confined to the people he is chasing.

Jackson makes Donnie an intelligent, charming thief who seems capable of staying a step ahead. The exchanges between him and Butler are among the film's strongest moments. Salvatore Esposito brings menace to Slavko, while Evin Ahmad gives Jovanna an intriguing ambiguity.

Direct, forceful filmmaking

Gudegast stages pursuits and gunfire with energy and craftsmanship. The camera captures movement without turning everything into frantic confusion. Moving the action to Europe adds variety, while the darker, cooler images maintain the series' rough atmosphere.

The film also touches on loyalty, corruption and the compromises made in the name of justice. Nick's moral uncertainty gives Butler something interesting to play. Those themes remain secondary to the action, but they add texture to his relationship with Donnie.

Strengths and limits

The action, atmosphere and two leads make Pantera entertaining. Butler and Jackson sustain a compelling dynamic, and the new surroundings help distinguish the sequel visually.

The story does not fully realize its potential, though. It relies on familiar heist patterns, offers fewer substantial surprises than it might, and leaves some promising supporting characters underdeveloped. Do not expect an exceptional plot.

As a forceful action thriller, however, it works. Butler provides the expected toughness and Jackson makes a strong counterpart. Viewers looking for intense action and morally compromised crime stories should find plenty to enjoy.
