15 Years (2023): review

Hannah Herzsprung leads a forceful music drama about anger, guilt and the temptation of revenge.

Chris Kraus’s 15 Years is a forceful music drama whose combination of craft and emotional radicalism is difficult to forget. Its German theatrical release was on January 11, 2024.

A pianist caught between anger and music

Jenny, a former piano prodigy, leaves prison after fifteen years for a crime she did not commit. Anger and memory shape her view of the world. When she discovers that the man she once loved, and who was responsible for her suffering, has become an internationally celebrated performer under the name Gimmiemore, her desire for revenge becomes overwhelming.

Revenge on a talent-show stage

The film’s artistic direction and musical accompaniment are exceptional. It moves between optimism and deep-seated revenge, bringing that conflict into the strange environment of a talent competition. Good and evil become increasingly difficult to separate. Jenny cuts through the story like an open razor: entertaining to watch, but also radical enough to send the audience through sharply contrasting emotions.

The force of the music

Kraus combines the psychological portrait of an intensely sensitive, furious avenger with an arresting music film. Annette Focks’s score is central to that experience. Beyond the drama, the story asks how far someone may go in seeking revenge for an injustice, and what happens when that drive belongs to a musician whose emotions repeatedly take control.

Hannah Herzsprung carries the conflict

Hannah Herzsprung gives Jenny von Loeben a remarkable performance. Hassan Akkouch, Albrecht Schuch and the wider ensemble surround her with characters who bring authenticity and intensity to their scenes. The acting gives the musical and moral conflicts their emotional force.

Verdict

15 Years entertains and invites reflection. It demonstrates how powerful and moving cinema can be, without allowing us to look away from difficult realities. For me, it is an exceptional film and an experience worth seeking out.
