The Trunk (2024): review

This mystery drama uses a temporary marriage to explore loneliness and the search for connection. The emotional weight of its central performances makes the secrets more than a mechanical puzzle.

Intimacy by contract

Noh In-ji works for a company arranging temporary marriages. Han Jeong-won enters such a relationship while his previous marriage continues to affect his life. The promise of an organised partnership consequently exists alongside unresolved feelings from the start.

The series uses that contradiction as a way into its characters. A contract can bring people together without deciding whether trust or genuine intimacy will follow. Behind the unusual premise, loneliness and longing remain deeply human problems.

The mystery belongs to the relationships

Seo Hyun-jin and Gong Yoo give the leads emotional depth. Their chemistry makes the encounters more interesting than a sequence of clues. Past and present overlap without allowing the people behind the puzzle to disappear.

Kim Kyu-tae’s direction creates a dense, melancholic atmosphere. Flashbacks gradually expand our understanding of the characters. The mystery surrounding the trunk provides tension, while the relationships give the events their real weight.

Verdict

The Trunk is a recommendation from me for viewers who enjoy mysteries with emotional depth. It encourages reflection on relationships and the search for genuine connection.

The two leads and the carefully shaped atmosphere make the difference. The puzzle keeps the story moving; the believable internal conflict makes us interested in its answers as well.
