The Next Level: A Club Scene With Power Beneath the Surface

Lisa Vicari, striking images and an intense soundtrack make the miniseries more than a conventional investigation.

The Next Level turns a death in Berlin's club scene into an investigation of influence, money and responsibility. The six-part miniseries stands out through its performers and the way sound and images make that world tangible.

Reporter Rosa Bernhard begins looking into the death of a young American woman at the Reaktor club. What first appears to be an article develops into a deeper inquiry that brings her close to the city's power structures.

Lisa Vicari gives Rosa curiosity, fear and self-doubt without making these reactions feel disconnected. Jens Harzer is compelling as the opaque property magnate Bodo Brenner, combining charm with threat. The supporting cast adds strength to the relationships surrounding the investigation.

Pia Strietmann and Julia Langhof make the club world vivid. Jakub Bejnarowicz's camera moves between bright dance floors and colder streets, while the driving music conveys the intensity of nightlife. The visual and acoustic design is one of the series' strongest features.

The story reaches beyond a conventional thriller to ask about capitalism, power and individual responsibility. Its willingness to leave room for interpretation is a strength rather than simply an unfinished gesture.

For me, The Next Level is an impressive miniseries with substance to match its atmosphere. Its investigation invites active reflection on the world it reveals, while remaining engaging as a character-driven story.
