Love Sucks has an appealing contrast between a fairground and Frankfurt's modern urban environment. The eight-part vampire romance does not develop its characters with the same confidence as its atmosphere.
Vampire Ben and mortal boxer Zelda fall into a relationship shaped by conflicts between their families. The Romeo-and-Juliet framework is familiar, and the story quickly follows predictable routes. Rushed developments and exaggerated clichés make the attachment less believable than it needs to be.
Damian Hardung and Havana Joy give solid performances, but the screenplay limits their emotional impact. Hardung makes Ben's inner conflict credible, while the relationship itself remains too shallow. Rick Okon and Anne Ratte-Polle provide stronger dark presences among the supporting characters.
Andreas Prochaska and Lea Becker handle the setting effectively. The boxing booth and fairground create vivid contrasts between everyday life and the fantasy elements. Carefully placed images give the series a dense atmosphere.
The idea of vampires as an elite feeding on the weak has potential, but receives only a superficial exploration. For me, the visual strengths cannot compensate for thin development and familiar plotting. Genre fans may enjoy individual moments, while viewers seeking more original ideas or deeper emotional drama are likely to be disappointed.
