Glass Heart: The Music Carries the Emotion

Energetic performances and inventive concert images make the band's story more compelling than its central romance.

Glass Heart surprised me. Not because it is perfect; it is not. It works when it concentrates on its real strengths: music, energy and emotion.

Akane Saijō is dismissed from her band shortly before an important performance. Alone with her drums, she begins playing in the rain. The moment is heightened, but effective, establishing music as an expression of identity. When the reclusive Naoki Fujitani invites her to form another band, a journey between rivalry, cooperation and self-realization begins.

The musical force carries the series. TENBLANK's performances feel raw and intense, with the cast's instrumental work giving the scenes a tangible energy. The camera moves close to the drums, strings and piano, making the concerts powerful audiovisual storytelling.

The supporting figures also matter. Guitarist Sho brings lightness and emotional depth; the stoic bassist Kazushi supplies balance. Former bandmate and star Toya is an egocentric whirlwind who dominates his scenes. He is exaggerated, but enjoyably so.

Akane herself is weaker. Too often she remains passive, reflecting the other characters rather than developing a drive of her own. The intended quiet romance with Naoki lacks depth and tension. If there is a spark between them, it is mainly musical.

The storytelling also makes mistakes. Some conflicts build only to dissipate too quickly. Questions about artistic ambition and commercial success are introduced without being pursued consistently. Yet when the band plays, those weaknesses recede and the sound, interaction and immediate energy take over.

Glass Heart is not a masterpiece, but it has heart, sweat and a real musical pulse. For viewers who want to feel music as well as hear it, it is highly recommendable.
