Caught: Promising Ingredients, Little Pressure

The Patagonian thriller has atmosphere and capable actors. Its heavy pace and insistent score undermine the suspense.

Caught has promising ingredients: an investigative journalist, a missing girl, an opaque social worker and Patagonia's harsh landscape. The result is much less gripping than that combination suggests.

Ema Garay exposes criminals through her online investigations. When sixteen-year-old Martina disappears, she encounters apparently exemplary social worker Leo Mercer. Truth, suspicion and the past should create pressure. In practice, the story too often drifts through talking, silence and meaningful-looking pauses without gaining momentum.

The opening episode could launch a powerful thriller. Instead, it is heavy and over-directed. I kept waiting for the point where the material would click, but little provided a real emotional hook.

Soledad Villamil makes Ema credible, yet surprisingly distant. Alberto Ammann's Leo is suitably unreadable without receiving enough depth. The characters remain difficult to connect with.

The music makes matters worse. It repeatedly insists that something important is happening, applying a thick layer of forced significance instead of building atmosphere.

Production values are decent and the subject has potential. The execution is sluggish, contrived and short on surprises. A story aiming for psychological depth gets stuck in the weight of its own ambitions.

Dedicated Harlan Coben fans may still want to investigate. For viewers hoping above all for genuine suspense, I found little reason to recommend the wait.
