A decision under pressure
Lena unexpectedly becomes pregnant and has to establish what she wants for herself. Her partner and the people around her respond with expectations of their own. Bauchgefühl explores how difficult self-determination becomes when others continually want a say.
I appreciate that Esther Rauch does not direct the story as a moral lecture. Different perspectives become visible without pushing Lena’s internal conflict aside. That gives a public debate an individual, human face.
Close to the characters
Laura Berlin makes Lena’s uncertainty and emotional strain believable. Ludwig Trepte’s Felix adds a relationship suddenly required to confront a concrete decision. The performances carry more weight than grand dramatic gestures.
Lisa Eidenhammer’s restrained camera work supports that intimacy. The short format helps the focus but also limits the supporting characters. At certain points I wanted to understand more about the people and relationships influencing Lena’s situation.
Verdict
Bauchgefühl is an important, thoughtful drama for me, approaching its sensitive subject through recognisable human feelings. Berlin’s performance and the quiet direction ensure that the characters do not disappear behind a message.
The supporting stories could have used greater depth. The honest examination of self-determination and other people’s expectations nevertheless convinces. Viewers looking for a short series connecting emotional experience with social questions will find a worthwhile drama here.
