The winter setting and strong central performances give Sebastian Ko's crime film atmosphere and emotional depth.

Zielfahnder – Polarjagd uses the winter landscape of northern Sweden to give its pursuit both atmosphere and isolation. Sebastian Ko's crime film is involving through the people at its center as well as the danger around them.

Hanna Landauer and Lars Röwer travel north to protect Anne Herbst, who is hiding from a violent former partner. The situation places the investigators in unfamiliar surroundings while making Anne's fear central to the story.

Ulrike C. Tscharre and Hanno Koffler give the partnership an emotional range that suits the pressure of the case. Lisa Wagner is particularly affecting as Anne. Her performance keeps the danger connected to a person's experience rather than allowing it to remain an abstract thriller device.

Christoph Krauss's camera captures the beauty and remoteness of the landscape. Matija Strniša's music reinforces the dark mood, while Ko maintains tension within that setting. The local performers and the variety of languages add credibility to the film's world.

For me, the combination of suspense and emotional depth makes this a strong crime film. The setting has a dramatic purpose, and the performances supply a human center. Polarjagd offers a pursuit that remains compelling because the people being threatened matter beyond their function in the plot.
