Woodwalkers adapts Katja Brandis' books into a fantasy adventure about Carag, a boy who grew up as a puma and must now find his way in the human world. At Clearwater High, a school for shapeshifters, he makes friends and encounters enemies while learning what his unusual identity means.

The film's strength is its combination of adventure, fantasy and coming-of-age drama. Damian John Harper gives the transformations visual impact, and the presence of real animals helps the fantasy world feel tangible rather than entirely constructed from digital effects.

Emile Chérif is convincing as Carag, expressing the conflict between animal instincts and human feelings. Lilli Falk as Holly and Johan von Ehrlich as Brandon provide strong support. The chemistry between the three central characters contributes considerably to the film's charm.

Identity, belonging and difference give the story relevance beyond its fantasy setting. Carag's desire to be accepted in human society reflects recognizable questions about growing up. The extraordinary abilities are important, but the need for friendship is what makes the characters accessible.

Broad landscapes and dynamic camerawork capture the animal energy of the action alongside the emotional struggles. The transformation sequences are particularly successful, supporting the sense of a world in which two forms of life overlap.

Woodwalkers is an effective introduction to its fantasy story. An involving plot, strong performances and visual variety make it appealing to younger viewers and genre fans alike. Readers of the books have a lively screen version to discover, while newcomers have enough character and adventure to find their way in.
