Transformers One makes the origins of Optimus Prime and Megatron more than another opportunity for spectacle. Josh Cooley uses their early friendship to explore leadership, ambition and competing ideas about their world.
Orion Pax and D-16 begin as workers on Cybertron. Their relationship and the political order around them give the adventure an emotional foundation. Knowing the figures they will become does not remove the interest in how their outlooks develop.
Chris Hemsworth and Brian Tyree Henry give the characters strong vocal presences. Henry is particularly effective, making D-16 charismatic while allowing his motivation to become increasingly complex. The performances provide depth beneath the mechanical designs.
The animation creates a detailed, cinematic Cybertron. Action sequences use the characters' changing abilities inventively, making the encounters visually dynamic. References for established fans coexist with a story newcomers can follow.
The film sometimes has too many themes for its running time. For me, the dense plot and emotional weight largely compensate. Transformers One marks a strong point for the franchise through its combination of impressive animation and a compelling friendship. Its questions about betrayal and leadership matter because the central characters feel like more than familiar names awaiting their final forms.
