The Wild Robot (2024): review

The Wild Robot (2024), directed by Chris Sanders and based on Peter Brown's novel, follows Roz, an intelligent robot stranded on an island after a shipwreck. Built for a very different environment, she has to adapt to nature and develops an unexpected bond with the animals, especially an orphaned gosling named Brightbill.

The emotional centre is Roz's changing relationship with Brightbill. She was not designed to be a mother, but caring for him draws her into that role. Their connection is told with warmth and humour as both learn how to survive. The film handles parenthood, friendship and adaptation particularly well, setting those experiences against the limits of Roz's programming.

Visually, the film is beautiful. Its landscapes capture both the island's isolation and its richness, while fluid, lively animation makes the interactions between Roz and the animals engaging. The detailed environment feels like a world the viewer can enter, rather than simply a backdrop for the story.

Judith Rakers gives Roz a gentle, empathetic voice in the German version, fitting the character's gradual emotional development. The original cast, including Lupita Nyong'o and Pedro Pascal, also gives the characters considerable depth.

The Wild Robot is a warm-hearted film with something to offer children and adults. Adventure, emotion and questions about what makes a relationship meaningful work together without weighing the story down. It is one of the year's standout animated films, and its portrait of friendship and adaptation in an unfamiliar world stays with you after the credits.
