The Six Triple Eight: An Important Story, an Uneven Film

Kerry Washington gives the drama force, but the staging does not consistently do justice to the battalion's achievements.

The Six Triple Eight moved me through the importance and emotional force of its story. As a complete film, however, Tyler Perry's war drama does not consistently meet that story's demands.

It follows the women of the 6888th battalion and their task of dealing with a huge backlog of wartime mail. Racism, sexism and the pressure of the work shape their experience. The achievement deserves attention, especially given how easily such contributions can be overlooked.

Kerry Washington is the film's center as Charity Adams. She conveys strength and determination with nuance. Her interactions with performers including Ebony Obsidian and Milauna Jackson give the drama an authenticity that I found involving.

Aaron Zigman's music supports the emotional moments. The Journey also affected me and remains memorable. The staging is less reliable: some depictions of wartime hardship feel artificial, weakening both the realism and the impact. Several images do not have the quality the material deserves.

I also wanted more emphasis on the battalion's accomplishments, alongside the discrimination the women endured. The balance sometimes makes the obstacles more prominent than the work itself.

For me, this remains an important contribution to remembering these women, but not a fully convincing film. Its emotional strength and lead performance cannot entirely overcome the flatness and lack of precision in parts of the direction.
