Novocaine (2025): review

Novocaine, released in Germany as Mr. No Pain, gives the action thriller a refreshing premise: a man who cannot feel pain is drawn into a deadly fight. Directors Dan Berk and Robert Olsen combine suspense with an unexpectedly strong comic streak.

Jack Quaid plays Nathan Caine, an ordinary bank employee whose condition prevents him from experiencing physical pain. It complicates his everyday life, but becomes an unusual advantage when Shari is kidnapped by bank robbers. Nathan goes after her, and the film makes its central distinction clear: not feeling an injury does not make him invulnerable. His body still has limits.

That tension gives the action a welcome unpredictability. Nathan can endure experiences that would stop another person, yet every encounter can leave real damage. The premise therefore creates both inventive confrontations and a reason to worry about him.

Quaid is convincing because he does not play Nathan as an invincible action hero. He remains someone trying to turn a weakness into an advantage. Amber Midthunder's Shari has more to do than occupy a conventional damsel-in-distress role, while Ray Nicholson gives antagonist Simon the right combination of calculation and volatility.

The film uses stylized images without losing itself in excess. Jacques Jouffret's camerawork gives the action momentum while also making room for Nathan's uncertainty. The music by Andrew Kawczynski and Lorne Balfe adds a driving pulse and force to the confrontations.

Lars Jacobson's screenplay balances action, thriller mechanics and a surprising amount of humour. It does not take itself too seriously, but avoids becoming a broad parody. The sharper lines comment on Nathan's situation without bringing the story to a halt.

Novocaine is fast, entertaining and an enjoyable variation on a familiar action setup. Its inventive premise, hard-hitting sequences and likeable characters work well together. If you want an action film with a fresh central idea, this is worth seeing.
