Eileen Byrne's Marianengraben brings together two people shaped by traumatic loss. Paula and Helmut, played by Luna Wedler and Edgar Selge, learn to live with their grief during a shared journey. The film considers how differently people respond to pain and guilt, and how an unexpected connection can make hope possible again.
Paula has lost her younger brother and is overwhelmed by guilt. She plans to travel to Trieste, where he died. At a cemetery she meets the abrasive Helmut, who wants to take his wife's ashes to Italy. They join forces, setting out on a journey that challenges their contrasting personalities while opening a path toward healing.
Wedler and Selge's chemistry is the film's particular strength. They make the development from mistrust to closeness credible through melancholy and quiet humor. Byrne balances painful and lighter moments, giving the direction an almost poetic quality without diminishing the seriousness of the subject. Her approach to grief and the work of returning to life feels honest.
Petra Korner's camera reinforces the road movie's melancholy through rough landscapes and evocative images. Open spaces echo the characters' internal confusion, making the physical journey a visual counterpart to their sense of emptiness.
Marianengraben is more than a story about death. It is a reminder of the importance of friendship, hope and the courage to continue living when that seems impossible. Its emotional force comes from the connection between its characters, not from pretending that connection can simply erase their losses.
