Ruth Beckermann's documentary Favoriten follows a primary-school class in Vienna's multicultural Favoriten district over three years. Most of the children come from migrant families. Through sustained, sensitive observation, the film shows how integration and the challenges of learning German shape daily school life.

Beckermann's particular achievement is keeping the children central. Rather than stating a list of problems with the education system, she allows the audience to experience obstacles and successes through their lives. Social relationships, cultural backgrounds and the conflicts arising between them emerge subtly but effectively.

Johannes Hammel's many close-ups create intimacy and place the viewer inside the classroom. The handheld camera captures emotion and interaction with the teacher and between pupils. Despite its serious subject, the film retains warmth and lightness through the children's less guarded moments.

Teacher Ilkay Idiskut is central. She is not only a source of knowledge but also a bridge between different cultures and social backgrounds. Her willingness to discuss sensitive subjects such as religion and gender roles demonstrates her commitment. Even when the burden on one person appears overwhelming, her dedication remains impressive.

Favoriten goes beyond a record of school life. It is an affecting film about equal opportunity, integration and the role of schools in a multicultural society. Its criticism of the system is subtle because it is grounded in people rather than slogans. Anyone interested in education and social justice will find much to consider.
