Ezra explores the difficulty of family life through a father and son's unsettled road trip. Tony Goldwyn combines humour and emotion in a story concerned with love, uncertainty and the struggle to respond to someone else's needs.
Bobby Cannavale gives Max strong emotional depth. The conflict between his fears and his love for his son makes the character convincing even when his decisions become chaotic. William A. Fitzgerald gives Ezra nuance and an unusually direct presence.
The treatment of autism avoids an excessively romantic or melodramatic presentation. The relationship includes difficulties and pleasures without turning Ezra into only a diagnosis or a device for the father's development. That honesty is one of the film's most valuable qualities.
Robert De Niro adds emotional weight as Max's father, while Rose Byrne provides a persuasive view of the shared parenting challenges. The ensemble makes the family dynamics more complex than a simple disagreement about the best course of action.
Handheld movement and a sense of visual lightness suit the restless journey. The open road contrasts effectively with the characters' internal unease. Music supports the emotional progression and adds a hopeful note.
Some weaknesses in structure remain, but the performances and balance between comedy and drama make Ezra worthwhile. It is a touching, often funny film whose interest in complicated relationships matters more than the outward shape of its road-trip story.
