School of Magical Animals 3 returns to the pupils and talking companions of the Winterstein school. Saving a threatened forest brings environmental concerns into a familiar mixture of friendship, growing up and magic.
The young performers grow with their characters. The changing relationships within the group give the sequel a sense of development. The new animal personalities also add freshness, particularly through humour that works well for the intended audience.
Sven Unterwaldt makes the magical setting visually attractive again. Live-action surroundings and animated animals fit together effectively. The forest setting gives the environmental theme a visible presence instead of leaving it as a message delivered only through dialogue.
The film handles that message in an approachable, entertaining way. It can discuss conservation without becoming excessively moralising. The comic animals provide useful lightness around the more serious concerns.
The storytelling is less consistent. Some scenes feel loosely arranged, and a clearer narrative shape would have helped. The characters' emotional conflicts also remain too close to the surface when there is room to go further.
Even so, the third film should satisfy younger viewers and fans of the earlier instalments. It offers enough humour, adventure and magic to compensate for the limited depth and occasional lack of cohesion. A worthwhile family sequel, with strengths that are clearest when judged for the children it wants to entertain.
