A Real Pain (2024): review

A Real Pain (2024), written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg, is a finely balanced tragicomedy about identity, loss and family inheritance. Eisenberg plays David opposite Kieran Culkin's Benji, and their performances give the story its emotional foundation.

Following their grandmother's death, the cousins travel to Poland to honour her and understand their family's roots. David has a structured life and a family of his own. Benji is a drifting free spirit whose charm and volatility unsettle David's ordered world. Visiting historical sites, including a former concentration camp, brings family history into contact with their personal differences and unresolved pain.

Eisenberg handles the balance between seriousness and comedy remarkably well. Humorous exchanges relieve the emotional weight without making the subject feel smaller. When the cousins clash, the scenes can be funny and painfully honest at once. The Polish locations give their journey a concrete connection to the history they are trying to approach.

The acting is the film's central strength. Eisenberg makes David neurotic but warm, with an inner conflict that is convincing and moving. Culkin's Benji is charming and rebellious, an effective contrast to David's self-control. Their chemistry makes the relationship feel lived in rather than constructed merely to illustrate opposing personalities.

The film considers heritage, trauma and how a family's collective memory affects its present. It treats the history of the Holocaust sensitively while also exploring the different ways the cousins experience their own suffering. The past matters, but it does not make their personal difficulties disappear.

The music adds emotional resonance without becoming intrusive, and the photography captures both the beauty of the places they visit and the weight of their history. Those choices support the characters' internal journey.

A Real Pain is an intelligent, affecting tragicomedy, with strong performances and sensitive direction. Its combination of humour and seriousness makes it entertaining in the moment and substantial enough to remain with you afterwards.
