My Best Friend, His Girlfriend and Me is a 2026 Netflix film. Marco Petry’s new German comedy immediately begins with a recognizable and relatable question: what happens to a friendship when a new romantic relationship suddenly changes the balance and one of them feels he is losing his best friend?
A friendship loses its balance
Olli and Matze have been inseparable since childhood. They live together, work at the same real-estate office and have spent years planning a trip around the world. Then Matze falls in love with Rebecca. For him, a new chapter begins. For Olli, the familiar order starts collapsing. Instead of simply talking through that change, Olli and Rebecca turn Matze’s time and attention into a competition.
Broad jokes crowd out the nuance
There is more than enough material here for an intelligent comedy about adult friendship. The movie understands that longstanding relationships have to change when new partners enter established lives. Unfortunately, it does not trust that idea for long. Interesting emotional friction repeatedly becomes a louder gag. Olli and Rebecca increasingly behave like rivals who need to win, while Matze remains surprisingly passive between them.
That setup creates a few genuinely funny moments, but the mechanism becomes repetitive remarkably quickly. Many jokes are pushed very obviously, conflicts are escalated instead of deepened, and the characters stay trapped inside broad roles. Olli is the immature friend, Rebecca is the controlling new partner, and Matze is the man caught in the middle. Because the basic problem is so recognizable, a little more nuance could have made the comedy much sharper.
The cast keeps things together
The cast keeps the movie from completely falling apart. Kostja Ullmann brings plenty of energy to Olli and manages to reveal the fear of change underneath his frustrating behavior. Janina Uhse gives Rebecca enough force to be a convincing opponent, while David Kross plays Matze in a deliberately quieter register. Together, they create enough momentum to carry the film across its 98-minute runtime, even when the jokes miss.
Visually, the production is clean, bright and uncomplicated. That suits an easy Netflix night, but it also makes the movie feel noticeably interchangeable. It is missing one genuinely distinctive creative idea, scene or observation that could turn a familiar setup into something memorable.
At least the pacing works. The story does not spend much time on side plots and stays focused on its central triangle. That makes the movie overall effortlessly easy to watch, but it also reinforces the sense that the characters and conflicts only develop as far as the next joke requires.
Verdict
My Best Friend, His Girlfriend and Me has a premise with more potential than the finished film uses. The performers are more likable than some of the people they play, and the light tone occasionally lands. Viewers looking for an undemanding German streaming comedy may still have a decent evening with it. But anyone hoping for a sharper or more emotional look at friendship, love and growing up will probably come away wanting more. That earns it 5 out of 10.
