Carrie: Mike Flanagan reveals a three-season plan for the adaptation

The filmmaker describes the ideas behind his expanded Stephen King adaptation. His plan is not a renewal announcement.

Mike Flanagan envisioned a three-season arc for Carrie, his television adaptation of Stephen King's novel. In an interview published by the Television Academy, the writer-director explained that he developed the expanded approach with King's support. That is a statement about his creative plan. It is not an announcement that Prime Video has commissioned two additional seasons.

The existing first season runs to eight episodes. Summer H. Howell plays Carrie White, while Samantha Sloyan plays her mother, Margaret. The adaptation places the sheltered teenager in public high school after her father's death, bringing bullying and the pressures of social media into her story. Flanagan serves as showrunner and writer and directed four episodes; King is also an executive producer.

The source novel was published on April 5, 1974, by Doubleday. King's official description centres on a misfit schoolgirl discovering telekinetic powers while facing a domineering religious mother and torment from her peers. That combination of adolescence, family pressure and supernatural ability remains the foundation of the adaptation.

Flanagan's interview discusses the wider possibilities he sees in King's fictional world and the ideas he brought to their conversations. He previously adapted Gerald's Game and Doctor Sleep. The full interview also reveals major plot developments, so readers who have not watched Carrie should approach it as spoiler-heavy material. Here, the relevant production news is the stated long-term plan, with any future commissioning decision remaining separate.
