Under a Dark Sun: Beautiful Surfaces, Uneven Depth

Ava Baya and the atmosphere of Provence sustain a mystery whose family conflicts do not always deliver enough force.

UNDER A DARK SUN Series Review (2025)

The six-part French miniseries Under a Dark Sun combines mystery, family drama and the visual allure of southern France. Ava Baya plays Alba, a young mother with a troubled past seeking a new start on a flower farm in Provence. The promise collapses when her employer is murdered. Alba becomes a suspect and discovers that the dead man was her biological father.

The contrast between floral beauty and emotional darkness gives the series its appeal. Golden light and rose fields surround a woman looking for identity, truth and forgiveness. Baya carries the material well, remaining quiet, intense and credible without turning Alba's distress into theatrics. Isabelle Adjani supplies a powerful presence as Béatrice, although some dialogue is too deliberately cryptic.

The storytelling is uneven. There are tense moments, surprising turns and interesting character dynamics, but they do not create a sustained pull. The middle section drags, with some episodes feeling like padding. Inheritance, family guilt and lies develop steadily without always gaining emotional force.

Visually, the series does almost everything right. Elegant camerawork and carefully matched light and color make Provence a presence in its own right: beautiful, sunlit and nevertheless full of shadows. Atmosphere works here, but the series sometimes relies on it instead of giving the story more substance.

The ending is solid. It resolves questions and brings Alba's story to an emotionally rounded, bittersweet conclusion. It is competently told rather than groundbreaking.

I give Under a Dark Sun 7 out of 10. It is worthwhile, particularly for viewers drawn to atmospheric, visually strong storytelling. The depth is limited, but the series often finds the right visual and emotional tone. Mystery, family tension and southern French surroundings provide a combination into which it is easy to settle.
